The meeting of the Tongan Methodist
Churches in the Los Angeles area as told by
Eddie Kelemeni, was where the mission of the
caucus was first introduced:
THE PURPOSE OF THE FIRST CONFERENCE
OF THE TONGAN-AMERICAN UNITED METHODIST
CHURCH.
THE CONFERENCE WAS HELD AT COMPTON,
ONTARIO, AND LENNOX CALIFORNIA FROM
AUGUST 1-4, 1990, FOR THE FOLLOWING:
1. To call together a conference of Tongan-
American United Methodist
churches
2. This conference united us to:
a) create, study, and plan together the work
that our Lord, Jesus Christ
has called us to do in his church.
b) to get to know one another; work together,
sing-joyfully, and give praise; and receive
communion in Christ.
c) that we remember and value the tradition
we grew up with and to educate ourselves
to enrich the spiritual lives of our members
as we envision the future of our work.
3. This conference will;
a) serve as a bridge for the Tongan-Americans
United Methodists in education, teamwork
and pastor’ appointments between churches
within their conferences. This conference
will also serve as a liaison to bring local
churches closer to their annual conference
and to inform the members of the structure
of the United Methodist Church.
b) gather input and ideas of Tongan-American
United Methodist churches to support the goal
of this conference.
c) gather the total number of membership
within the Tongan-American United Methodist
Churches and to publish a directory of the
Tongan-American churches and resources from
which they can seek help.
d) hold meetings, become a resource place for
education and spiritual fellowship for those who
have been called by Christ to be His servants.
e) govern the matters of the Tongan-American
United Methodist Churches in regard to its
mission, tradition, and its future. This
conference's ideas will also create hope and
mission and shall reserve the right of electing
its staff for the future.
4. This conference will form the Tongan Caucus
and elect its representative to the Pacific
Islander’s Caucus. (It is important for us
be in one mine while conducting business
meetings of this conference.
Robert’s Rules of Order Revised will be used
as a meeting manual.)
